Menina e Moça Project
In collaboration with Cécile
Lombard (the French
translator of
Menina e
Moça, whose study of the book I
have posted here)
I'm making it a project to get the book translated into English one
way or another. I am willing to do it myself if someone pays me a
nominal sum, but this is more a threat than an offer, since it would be
preferable for the book to be translated by someone who actually knows
Portuguese well. (My fragmentary attempt is
here).
Be it noted, however, that some of the
most beloved translations in the English language -- for example,
Motteux's Don Quixote and Urquhart's Gargantua and Pantagreul
-- were highly inaccurate. So I'm throwing down the gauntlet.
Some time ago Suzette Macedo
published a partial translation which I haven't seen yet
(it's available for only $60
here), and she would probably be the first choice as a translator.
Please inform anyone who might be
interested in this project. Anyone who has any ideas about a
translator, funding, or a publisher should leave a comment here, or
email emersonj at gmail dot com.
UPDATE: |
Powells Books is now stocking Menina e
Moça (in Portuguese). I have encouraged them to add Cécile
Lombard's French translation.
